This is the third of three posts addressing this question…
“The Bible is God's word, right? Ok. If what's true is true, then how do you know if your interpretation of a particular scripture is true? If you are connected right, will you know through the voice of the Holy Spirit?”
My first post dealt with three underlying beliefs to our time in God’s Word. My second post dealt with three key questions that need to be asked to correctly understand God’s Word.
Now, let me close with a few final thoughts.
First, there are some important attitudes that we must have in place as we spend time with God through His Word. We need to be sure and approach this special time in the right way.
We must begin with an attitude of reverence. As we sit and open the Bible, we are preparing to come face-to-face with the sovereign God of all creation. Next is the attitude of expectancy. That is, we must believe and expect that we are really meeting with God and that He really has something to say to us. The final attitude is obedience. We must settle on the front end that we are coming to God with the commitment to follow what He says.
Second, I believe being in community with other Christ-followers helps in the quest to know God’s Word. It is in community that you will have the opportunity for others to speak into your life regarding what you find in God’s Word. Other godly people will be an incredible resource as you grow in your faith.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16
Finally, we always need to remember that we have the incredible privilege of spending time with, learning from and getting to know God of the universe. Amazing! As you read the Bible, you are reading the very words of God.
“Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God—which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13
I pray that God will indeed reveal Himself to you clearly through the pages of the Bible. I pray He will bring others into your life that will speak the truth. And I pray that God will use His Word to radically change you as He continues His work in you.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
