”Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.” Luke 21:37-38
When I was younger, I remember expressing disbelief at how fast life was passing me by. This probably started when my first child was born and I saw how fast she was growing up. I also remember people older than me saying that the pace of life just continued to get faster and faster each year. At the time, I didn’t think that was possible; life was too fast already.
But now I understand the reality that life gets even faster as you get older. For me, the challenge isn’t how to run faster, but rather how to run longer. I’m not interested in sprinting for a season and flaming out; I want to still be running years from now. So coming across the verse above really caught my attention.
We read throughout the gospels about the time Jesus spent doing ministry.
“Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.” Matthew 9:35
“That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.” Mark 1:32
We also read about the time He spent alone with His Father.
“After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23
“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Luke 5:16
But in Luke 21:37, we find in one place Jesus living His life with a great rhythm – work during the day; retreat during the night. Meet the needs of those around you as you’re out; refocus and recharge when you’re home. Give out of the overflow of your relationship with God every day; invest in that relationship every night.
Life will continue to go by at a fast pace. But I can find a rhythm to life that will keep me in the race for a long time to come – time with people; time with God.
